With unending emotional stress, increasingly toxic food additives, consumption of chlorinated water, and overuse of antibiotics and other medications, this may be the most in need of fermented foods humans have found themselves in.
What are fermented foods and why are they important? Fermented foods contain healthy bacteria called probiotics. Probiotics live inside your body and have a symbiotic relationship with you: You provide them with a safe environment with lots of food, and they provide many health benefits such as improved digestion, vitamin production, and immune system enhancement in return.
Yogurt, kefir, kim chi, miso, and sauerkraut are examples of fermented foods.
Where can I get fermented foods and the Probiotics that accompany them? The best place to get these foods is to learn to make them yourself. A good place to begin is, "Google." Sauerkraut and yogurt are probably the easiest to make and a great place to start.
Why should I bother? If you have ever been on antibiotics during your lifetime, eat any variation of the standard American diet, or experience stress, it is likely that your probiotic balance is off.
Restoring this by consuming fermented foods will likely reap many health benefits including better immunity and improved digestion/elimination.
If you are having trouble getting started, feel free to contact our office and I will do my best to point you in the right direction.
